The Problem
With the advent of the new FAA approved Light Sport Category of aircraft, and the development of new, lightweight, high performance aircraft engines, there has been no viable hydraulically actuated, bolt-on, cockpit controlled variable pitch/constant speed propeller system. All of the hydraulically controlled propellers on the market necessitate the use of heavy, hollow crankshaft engines, heavy, cumbersome, and expensive propeller governors. These systems are based on 1930’s technology. They are not effective for the new lightweight high performance aircraft that are emerging on the market today.
The Pitch Control Systems (Vari-Prop) Solution
Pitch control systems has designed, produced, and tested a hydraulically actuated cockpit controlled propeller system. The design maximizes the precise controllability of hydraulic actuation. Hydraulic actuation is extremely tough and reliable while eliminating the problem of exposed electrical brushes, wiring and connectors used on the complicated electrically actuated systems. These systems have been notably problematic and unreliable. Also the Vari-Prop system can be bolted onto any engine that is strong enough to turn it (80 300 hp) and utilize the benefits of variable pitch. The Vari-Prop system is extremely simple and easy to install. The cockpit actuator is pilot friendly, intuitive, and simple to use. The Vari-Prop system can be mounted on the large direct drive engines with heavy torsional vibration pulses without wear or damage. The Vari-prop system has the ability to custom design the proper propeller blades for the customer’s application. This will insure that the customer gets the proper blades with the required length and twist. The electrical competitors will not withstand the heavy torsional vibration loads created by the larger direct drive engines. They also try to make one blade fit all applications. If the blades are too long, they shorten the blades thus destroying the twist. The Vari-Prop system is designed to meet or exceed applicable FAA and ASTM construction and safety standards.
